Many professionals, including attorneys, doctors and other treatment providers have clients or patients whom they know will benefit from getting a functional brain scan.  SPECT brain imaging at CereScan does require a physician referral that includes the clinical indication (or medical reason) for the scan.  Once the brain scan appointment is scheduled, the patient completes the intake paperwork. A CereScan clinician does an intake interview with the patient to review the information and ask any additional questions that may be important to the reading physician.  The patient will also be given some structured clinical assessments while at their brain scan appointments.

Most patients will receive two scans which are performed 2 days apart.  The first scan is to assess the patient’s brain function during concentration, and the second one is a baseline scan that assesses the patient’s brain “at rest.”  During the patient’s appointment a small amount of a radiopharmaceutical is injected into the vein via a small IV catheter. The radio-isotope is absorbed into the patient’s brain within three minutes of injection. The isotope is temporarily fixed to the areas of the brain in proportion to the amount of blood flow in that region of the brain. The amount of radiation that is administered is very small and usually disappears from the patient’s body within 30 hours. After the patient finishes their visit they are free to return to their regular routine without any restrictions.

The data from the camera and the resulting images processed through CereScan’s state-of-the-art  brain imaging software  are  sent to one of our reading physicians for interpretation.  After a thorough analysis, a detailed report is generated by experts who are specifically trained in brain related pathologies and have extensive experience in reading brain scans. The report is sent to the patient their referring doctor.
